Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers – what is a porcelain veneer?  Are veneers removable?

A porcelain veneer is a very thin piece tooth shaped porcelain that is made in a dental laboratory.  Porcelain veneers are bonded onto the front surfaces of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

Currently, a dental veneer can be made up of  2 different materials including composite veneer and porcelain veneer. At Valley Gentle Dental, porcelain or ceramic veneer is very popular, because it resembles the colour and shape of your natural tooth.  A porcelain or ceramic veneer is very durable and can last for many years.  It is recommended that you have your teeth straightened with braces and whitened with teeth whitening prior to making of a porcelain veneer.  Porcelain veneers with good margins can also protect teeth from decay.

Veneers pros and cons:

  • To create a aesthetically proportioned smile
  • To correct misaligned teeth
  • To mask discoloured or stained teeth
  • To cover uneven or poorly shaped teeth
  • To close unwanted space

  • Thin layer of tooth has to be removed

How do they put veneers on teeth?

At your initial visit, our dentist will take X-ray of your teeth and check to ensure your teeth are suitable to receive veneers.  Once we establish the suitability of your teeth, several impressions or moulds of your jaws and pictures of your teeth will be taken.  Your teeth will then be prepared to a certain specification while usually without any anaesthetic and temporary veneers may be made to protect your teeth. The temporary veneers will be temporarily cemented to your teeth until the permanent veneers return from the laboratory.  Your next visit will be scheduled for the following week.

At your second visit, your temporary veneers will be removed and your new permanent veneers will be tried in to check their colour and fit.  Once you are satisfied with the veneers, they will then be carefully cemented on to your teeth.

You will be also be given post operative care instructions.  On how long do veneers last for?  Proper use of your veneers, good oral hygiene and  regular dental visits to  your dentist will ensure longevity of your veneers.
